Description :
Ultrafiltration (UF) Membrane | 0.01 Micron Physical Filtration for Bacteria & Virus Removal

Ultrafiltration (UF) Membranes provide advanced 0.01–0.1μm physical filtration, removing 99.99% of bacteria and viruses while retaining natural minerals. Ideal for POU, Whole-House, and RO pre-treatment.

Features :

What Does Ultrafiltration Remove?

The small pore size of the UF membrane makes it highly effective at removing contaminants that cause turbidity and pose health risks

Bacteria (Pathogenic)Removes 99.99%

VirusesHighly Effective

Protozoa & Cysts Removes Giardia and Cryptosporidium

Suspended Solids Sand, silt, dirt, rust, and other particulate matter.

Other Contaminants Pollen, Algae, Colloids, High Molecular Weight Organic Compounds, and Endotoxins.

What does it do: Ultrafiltration (UF) is a pressure-driven membrane process that acts as a robust physical barrier to water contaminants. It uses a semi-permeable membrane with incredibly fine pores, typically in the range of to microns (10 to 100 nanometers)

The key principle is size exclusion: particles larger than the pore size are physically blocked, while clean water and smaller dissolved molecules, including essential natural minerals, are allowed to pass through as the "filtrate."

Good to know:
UF membranes are often constructed with hollow fibers, allowing water to flow either from the inside or outside of the fibers. The pressure differential across the membrane is what drives the clean water through the microscopic pores, leaving a concentrated stream of impurities behind.

What UF Does NOT Remove (Limitations)

It is important to understand the limitations of UF filtration:

  • Dissolved Salts/Ions: Does not remove dissolved ions (e.g., sodium, chloride, calcium, magnesium ions) that contribute to water hardness.

  • Dissolved Chemicals: Does not remove dissolved heavy metals or very small low molecular weight organic compounds (like certain pesticides or herbicides) unless they are physically bound to larger particles.

Maintenance:

The Ultrafiltration (UF) Membrane is a physical barrier that collects and retains contaminants larger than its pore size. Maintenance for UF differs significantly from disposable filters and is crucial for maintaining its high flow rate and long lifespan.

Key Maintenance Feature: Back-Washing

Unlike disposable cartridges, some UF systems allow for periodic back-washing or flushing (reversing the water flow).

  • Purpose: Back-washing removes the accumulated contaminants (filter cake) from the membrane surface, preventing clogging and restoring the membrane's original flow rate.

  • Note: This feature is standard on commercial hollow-fiber systems but may be limited or require manual action on simple cartridge-style units.

Crucial Pre-Filtration

While the UF membrane is highly robust, pre-filtration is still vital for maximising its lifespan:

  • Sediment Protection: Install a coarse sediment filter (e.g., 5 micron PP) upstream to remove large, abrasive particles and reduce the frequency of back-washing required.

Replacement Schedule

The UF membrane has a much longer service life than carbon or sediment filters, but its performance will eventually degrade.

  • Lifespan: UF membranes typically last between 2 to 5 years, depending on the quality of your feed water and the effectiveness of your pre-filters.

  • Sign of Failure: The primary indicator that the UF membrane needs replacement is a severe, permanent drop in water flow rate that cannot be restored by flushing or back-washing. This indicates the membrane pores have become irreversibly fouled or damaged.
